About Brutus Law Group

The Brutus Law Group is a law firm based in South Florida. Its principal, Phillip Brutus is a seasoned lawyer who has been practicing for more than 30 years in the State of Florida. Attorney Brutus obtained a BS degree from the University of Massachusetts (UMass-Boston) in 1982 and in 1985, he earned a Juris Doctor (JD) from the Suffolk University School of Law, also located in Boston. He began his career as a Trial Attorney in the Federal Public Defender's Office for the Southern District of Florida. He went into private practice in 1989 where he has represented many clients in civil and criminal matters, both in State and Federal Courts, including but not limited to the Immigration Court and the Board of Immigration Appeals. He is a admitted to the US Supreme Court Bar, the United States Court of International Trade and the US District Court for the Southern and Middle Districts of Florida

Over the course of his career, Mr. Brutus has served in a number of public positions. He was appointed to the Miami-Dade County Community Council, whose mandate was to adjudicate Building & Zoning disputes throughout the county. He also served as a General Magistrate For the Miami-Dade Value Adjustment Board, where he adjudicated and issued hundreds of Rulings on Taxpayers' appeals of their commercial and residential property tax assessments. In the year 2000, he was elected to the Florida House of Representatives in Tallahassee, where he served for six years. In that capacity, he served as Vice-Chair of several major Committees, including, but not limited to the Banking & Finance Committee and the Claims Committee, among others.

Over the years, Phillip J. Brutus has worked with several prominent jurists in representing immigrants in Federal Court. Preeminent Immigration Lawyer, author and Immigration Expert, Ira J. Kurzban had this to say about Phillip J. Brutus:

"Over twenty-five years ago, Phillip graciously volunteered, along with only a handful of other lawyers to spend two weeks at the Guantanamo Bay Camp, assisting hundreds of Haitian political refugees complete their asylum applications. As a result of his work in the Landmark case of Haitian Refugee Center v. Baker, thousands of Haitian lives were saved who otherwise would have been returned and persecuted in Haiti."  Ira J. Kurzban, Esquire, Author of the Kurzban Immigration Law Source Book.
